Phosgene is the chemical compound with the formula COCl2. A colorless gas, in low concentrations its odor resembles freshly cut hay or grass. Phosgene is a valued industrial building block, especially for the production of urethanes and polycarbonate plastics. However, it is very poisonous. The phosgene and the molten carboxylic acid react to synthesize an acid chloride series, and its main use is as an intermediate for the synthesis of pesticides, medicines and dyes.
